Not really paying attention to those files, I then see in the configuration page for that VM on the host, a message bar saying something to the effect of, "consolidation is needed on this VM." I click okay. I quickly browse the datastore for that VM and notice several files more than usual. So I go to the snapshot manager for that VM to see about consolidating snapshots, but there are none to consolidate. I assume this is one of the failed snapshots.
So when I noticed this and the fact that the VM (file server) was off, I attempted to start it. I do know that Veeam retried a couple times overnight, erroring out due to insufficient space available because of open snapshots. I leave 25% or more of free space on the volume for snapshots and will investigate the issue further once I can get back into my host (which is the problem). I have a good idea of what happened and I am not concerned as to why it ran out of space.
I have a large newly created file server that over the weekend ran out of space on its datastore during a backup with Veeam.
